What is IVF? IVF or In Vitro Fertilisation is a process of fertilizing the egg in an external environment and with external help. The egg is combined with the sperm outside the body or 'in-vitro'- precisely in a glass/test tube. The process also involves close monitoring and simulation of a women's womb and ovulatory process, in order to fertilise the egg. The fertilised egg (or zygote) is observed for 2-6 days in a simulated medium, much akin to the womb, and is then transferred to the woman's uterus. This process intends to initiate a successful pregnancy. After a patient undergoes the IVF procedure, about two weeks later, a pregnancy blood test is performed. If this test is positive, the patient is considered four weeks pregnant. Are there any risks with IVF? IVF is generally considered a safe procedure with very few risks. However, one is likely to encounter/develop minor problems such as: Although helpful, the fertility drugs advised during the treatment may lead to certain side effects like headache, mood swings and abdominal pain. While collecting your egg, you may have a little bleeding, damage to the bladder or infection. Use of fertility medications may also cause ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome (OHSS) in which your ovaries become swollen and painful. However, this is a very rare condition.
